Following our successful upgrades at Exeter College last year, we were invited back to take on an exciting new challenge: transforming a former IT classroom into a state-of-the-art Pastry Kitchen. Scheduled over the summer break, the project had an ambitious timeline of just two months from initial design concepts to final handover. The goal was to create a fully equipped, flexible teaching space capable of accommodating 16 pupils alongside a dedicated teacher demonstration station.
We worked closely with our partners at Sherwoods, who carried out essential electrical upgrades, installed Altro walkway flooring, hygienic wall cladding, and new water supplies. A pumped combi waste system was also implemented to support a new Rational 20-grid combination oven with a condensate hood. Simultaneously, our in-house design team collaborated with the college to optimize the available space, ensuring functionality, efficiency, and adaptability were built into every corner of the kitchen.
At the heart of the room sits a bespoke island suite with granite worktops and a stainless steel service spine, placing the teacher’s station in a central, highly visible position for demonstrations. Surrounding the room are bespoke stainless steel units incorporating removable induction hobs with fume filtration hoods, Foster flex multi-temperature drawers, and inset sink bowls with covers. This layout ensures the kitchen remains versatile and adaptable, supporting a wide range of pastry techniques and teaching methods.
Despite the tight timeline and the challenge of converting a non-kitchen space, the project was delivered on time and within budget. The result is a high-quality, flexible teaching kitchen that will inspire and support Exeter College’s future pastry chefs for years to come, providing a professional environment that seamlessly combines efficiency, flexibility, and style.
